The Elliott County Christian Community Center recently cut the ribbon on its new food bank facility. Last year, the nonprofit provided community members with over 100 boxes of food each month, now they serve more than 200 families monthly. The organization accepts both monetary and food donations and receives limited funding from United Way.
Brian Flannery, Director of the Elliott County Christian Community Center, said the new food bank facility fills a vital gap in the region.
“The Department of Agriculture considers Elliott County a food desert, because per capita, per square mile, there's not enough food access. So, we help meet the need to quench that desert, and to be able to give food to local people,” said Flannery.
Officials said families must register every month they intend to collect a box. Eligibility for the food bank varies per household size and income, but individuals making less than $2,323 each month qualify.
Flannery added the nonprofit harbors no judgment, and people are encouraged to ask for help if they need it.
“Don't be hesitant to ever reach out to ask help from your neighbor, and that's what we consider our individuals that come, our neighbors. They're not a lower class of citizens. We love them, just like Christ loved his people,” said Flannery.
The food bank is located at 3077 South KY-7, Sandy Hook, between Dollar General and Sandy Hook United Methodist Church. Community members can schedule an appointment by calling (606) 738-4270.
