The Kentucky Blood Center is set to host a blood drive on November 30 at the Morehead Kroger. Donations to the KBC supply blood to more than 70 Kentucky hospitals.
Eric Lindsey is the Director of Media and Branding at the KBC. He said the KBC is dependent on donations during winter months.
“We know historically it’s just a tough time of the year for us. So, we’re hopeful that folks can be proactive both heading into the winter months and then also during the winter months, of making blood donation a priority,” said Lindsey.
Officials said blood donations decrease in the colder months, making winter drives a critical resource for the KBC. Inclement weather discourages many would-be donors from going out. Additionally, holding high school blood drives becomes difficult due to winter break.
Lindsey added an uptick in illness this time of year also results in fewer donors.
“Whether it’s the yearly flu, or COVID, or the common cold, whatever it may be, obviously we know over the winter months, when folks are in tight quarters, we see more illnesses which just means fewer donors coming in our doors,” said Lindsey.
Officials said the entire process takes 45 minutes from start to finish, and donors will receive a free “Eat, Sleep, Donate, Repeat” T-shirt.
Potential donors must be at least 17, or 16 with parental consent. Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, have a photo ID, and be in good health. Appointments are preferred but walk-ins are welcome. More restrictions and information about the drive can be found on the Kentucky Blood Center website.
