Ground broken on two large building projects on Morehead State University’s campus

Samantha Morrill

Some important events occurred on Morehead State University’s campus Friday of homecoming week. Namely the groundbreaking for two new buildings planned to come to campus: the new science and engineering building and new residence hall, both currently unnamed.

At the groundbreaking, MSU President Jay Morgan spoke of progress and the continuing efforts to improve different aspects of the campus. He noted that MSU recently placed 14th in a list of the top public regional schools in the south. Morgan said that kind of progress can be attributed to various academic improvements across campus.

“We also have to move our facilities forward, and I mentioned earlier today that’s got to be our academic facilities, our athletic facilities, and our residential facilities. And today I think you’ll see part of that progress continuing. We are investing a tremendous amount of money in student services on campus, particularly around our residential halls,” said Morgan.

He said the new buildings mark a turning point for Morehead, as students are welcomed into state-of-the-art facilities and opportunities.

“As our construction starts literally fairly quickly, our hope is that while it will be a little bit noisy and a little bit messy and we’re going to move some parking around, ultimately this is going to be a great asset for our students, and an attractive asset students will want to live in,” said Morgan.

Morgan said the new residence hall was designed with assistance from the Student Government Association on campus, with representatives frequently meeting with architects and faculty to help bring all their ideas to life.

Now that ground has been broken on the sites the progress to get the buildings constructed will begin. To that end, the site of the new residence hall has been cleared of vehicles and a new parking lot at the former home of Weatherby Gym is now open.
