Morehead State Public Radio 2024 Fall Fundraiser and Membership Drive

Morehead State Public Radio’s Fall Fundraiser and Membership Drive is October 21 – 25. New listeners are invited to become members while current members may renew their yearly membership.

“Contributions and memberships help MSPR receive grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting,” said Paul Hitchcock, MSPR general manager. “Our ability to raise funds and increase our membership is important to meeting CPB criteria to purchase national programs such as All Things Considered, Latino USA, Morning Edition, The Jazz Network, and World Café.”

Since 1965, Morehead State Public Radio has operated from Morehead State University as east Kentucky’s first public radio station (WMKY, 90.3FM), keeping the people of east Kentucky informed, entertained, and connected to their community.

“The involvement of MSPR in community and regional activities helps to increase awareness, encourage participation, improve learning and understanding of cultural, diversity, and social issues,” Hitchcock noted. “MSPR’s outreach and engagement enhance the facilitation of connecting people to needed resources and strengthening partnerships between organizations in the region.”

MSPR’s award-winning news team offers an in-depth focus on regional news with locally produced newscasts during Morning Edition, Midday News, and All Things Considered. Recently, MSPR received nine Kentucky Broadcasters Association Excellence in Broadcasting Awards. In addition, MSPR partners with students in MSUs Spanish and Level Up programs to translate MSPR’s local news stories from English to Spanish posted on the station’s website. The experience helps students build communication, professionalism, critical thinking, and teamwork skills.

“It’s an important part of our mission to provide hands-on student opportunities, local news, and programming that is educational, informative, and entertaining,” said Hitchcock.

New programs were recently added to WMKY’s weekday and overnight broadcast schedule:

  • Afternoon Blend (Tues. – Fri., 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.) features smooth jazz and adult hits for an upbeat and uplifting mix of instrumental jazz and contemporary favorites.
  • WFMT’s Jazz Network (12 a.m. to 5 a.m.) offers the finest in traditional jazz and jazz vocalists performing classics from the Great American Songbook.
  • Morning Classics with Greg Jenkins (Mon. – Thurs., 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.) offers the best in popular classical music. Special features include 90 Second Naturalist, A Moment of Science, Morehead State Today, The Reader’s Notebook, and Word of The Day.
  • The New York Philharmonic (Mon., 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.) presents recent live performances, archived and commercial recordings.

Financial gifts to the MSPR Fund support student work studies and local programming. Supporters also have an option to designate gifts to MSPR’s Enhancement Fund, providing scholarships to qualified students at Morehead State University.
