US 32 repaving project in Morehead expected to be complete by Friday

Samantha Morrill

Ongoing road work on US 32 in Morehead is nearing completion. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials said the road work that began this weekend is slated to wrap up at the end of the week. Starting at mile marker 6.3, just east of Forest Hill Drive, US 32 is being repaved down to the intersection with US 60.

Cabinet spokesman Allen Blair said the work being done entirely overnight was a conscious effort, especially considering Rowan County students have returned to school this week.

“To lessen the impact to those travelers and reduce the impacts that paving has on traffic, we're doing it at night, between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Work starts every night at 6 and we'll have one lane closed, as they mill and pave, and then at 6 a.m.. They'll reopen everything to the four lanes of traffic,” said Blair.

Blair said while traffic overnight is lessened, there are still dangers for workers and motorists who are out on the road.

“We just ask everyone to slow down, especially if you are out at night through that area. Just understand there will be lane closures and watch for merging traffic. Slow down, reduce distractions keep yourself safe, and keep the workers safe,” Blair said.

Officials said the road is only being paved, and no alterations to the lanes will be made. Blair said the initiative should be completed by this Friday, as long as the weather stays clear.
