Over the past month, Frontier Housing in Morehead has hosted a team from AmeriCorps. The organization said the National Civilian Community Corps has been helping families build homes in the Morehead area.
The team, Elm 1, was assigned to Frontier Housing’s Mutual Self-Help Sites. Organizers said these sites are set up so that in exchange for labor, homebuyers are only required to finance the cost of the land, materials, and subcontractors required to complete their new homes.
AmeriCorps NCCC team lead Victoria Kuo said her team has had a major impact over the last month.
“We've completed one house and that's like the entire construction process including painting, landscaping, and driveways,” said Kuo. “We've also worked on six other incomplete houses in our time here. They start from nothing, and we put two under roof, complete with walls and flooring.”
Kuo said Elm 1 has been staying with the First Baptist Church and Morehead has been very welcoming to them.
“The people there have been incredibly kind to us. Not only that, but Frontier Hosing has also always answered our questions and they even organized team meetings, breakfasts, and even the site supervisors have been patient and understanding when training my team members. It’s been lovely,” said Kuo.
Kuo said the opportunity to help people complete work in their new homes is a great way to see America. AmeriCorps NCCC has teams all over the US and its territories doing similar work. In addition to the homes they helped build, AmeriCorps volunteers also volunteered at locations like Doves women’s shelter and aided in trail building in the area.
