Isolated flooding a concern for eastern Kentucky this week

According to the National Weather Service, for the next several days most of eastern Kentucky is under a marginal risk for severe weather. Officials said much of the region is expected to get heavy rains, high winds, elevated humidity, and high temperatures Tuesday through Friday. Forecasters said high temperatures and humidity will make Wednesday and Thursday feel as though it’s 100 to 105 degrees.

Anthony Ritchie is a Meteorologist with the NWS in Jackson. He said there’s a 10 percent chance of a severe thunderstorm in the region, but the main concern is not just the severe weather.

“The risk for excess flooding is a little bit higher, so there’s a little better chance it looks like for heavier rain and some isolated flooding issues than there is actual severe weather,” said Ritchie.

Ritchie said monitoring weather alerts is important for safety in case the outlook changes quickly.

“The main thing they can do is for anyone who has an old weather radio is just keep that turned on in case there’s any sort of advisories or warnings issued,” said Ritchie. “But other than that, people monitor their favorite source for weather information. Whether it be the radio, TV station, or weather.gov.”

Ritchie said the region is only under a marginal risk of severe weather, but it will last for the remainder of the week. Tuesday’s forecast calls for an 80 percent chance of rain and storms throughout the day, then a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms overnight with lows around 71.
