Non-profit organization aims to support Rowan County youth in need

Viking Community PTSA

A local non-profit organization is starting a new program to gather supplies for family resource centers. The Viking Community Parent Teacher Student Association has developed its “Adopt a Student – A Fairy Godparent Program” initiative to help Rowan County students in need.

Organizers said school counselors and resource officers can refer families to the PTSA and the organization will work to supply what is needed. Crystal Alexander is the President of the Viking Community PTSA, she said the demand for a program like this is high.

“The people that have reached out to me needing help, it’s unbelievable. But I’m equally as shocked at how many people have reached out wanting to help. So, I really hope we can keep that momentum,” said Alexander.

The initiative is a collaboration between the non-profit and Rowan County family resource centers. Alexander said the organization will ask questions so they can deliver the best possible supplies.

“The Google form is going to ask the child’s sizes, the child’s age, what grade that they’re in. And some personal questions about preferences, what’s your favorite team, do you like a certain character? We also want to think about our sensory kids that prefer stretchy clothing or maybe slip-on shoes,” said Alexander.

Officials said there are over 100 children in need that could be helped through Adopt a Student and community donations will be needed to make the most impact.

Information on donating and applying to Adopt a Student can be found on the Viking Community PTSA Facebook page.
