Big changes have happened at the Rowan County Public Library. Officials said the renovations and rebranding aim to make the library a bright friendly space for all to enjoy.
Some of the work includes a new lighting system, updated and colorful furniture, and other systems to increase energy efficiency in the library.
Morgan Mullins is the Communications Manager for RCPL. He said the books and other media will soon undergo an organizational change. He said books will transition from an interfiled fiction collection to what’s called the bookstore model or “genrefication”.
“That is where instead of having all of the fiction be in alphabetical order by author’s last name and then by title, it will be by genre, and then alphabetical order. So, we will have a shelf of fantasy, a shelf of science fiction, a shelf of westerns, romance, mystery, and so on, and the hope is that that will create a better user experience,” said Mullins.
Mullins said among the changes comes a new logo that represents the community.
“We’ve got like MSU gold, we have a purple which I actually took from Doves of the Gateway. It’s very close to their purple. We have Viking green, and we have St. Claire red. So that way it’s something from different parts of our community to represent all of Morehead and Rowan County,” said Mullins.
Mullins said one goal of the rebranding is to inform people that the library isn’t just a place to check out books, but is more of a community center, with social programs and services.
