The splash pad located next to the city park in Morehead is getting ready to open for the season. Officials said they have had the facilities on and running to ensure proper circulation of water treatment chemicals ahead of Memorial Day weekend.
Matt Hamilton, Director of Parks and Recreation for the city of Morehead, said operating hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, with birthdays and reservations available from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
“The splash pad is free to the public. So, you can come in at any time, bring your family, and enjoy it. We get people from all over the state, we’ve actually had some people visit from West Virginia and places. So, just come in, and enjoy it. We sell concessions, we have really nice restrooms. I know that seems like a minuscule thing to say, but that’s actually a big benefit. When people come in, they appreciate having nice restrooms,” said Hamilton.
The splash pad offers children and families a way to have some summer fun, and city employees will be on hand to ensure safety.
“We require everyone to be CPR, AED, and first aid certified. We do not have to do that, but we want to ensure the safety of the public. So, we put people out there working the concessions and on the deck at all times. That splash pad is never unattended by employees of the city of Morehead,” said Hamilton.
Hamilton added that the staff puts great effort into keeping the space clean and safe and said that’s why outside food and drinks are not allowed. He said concessions are available, but employees want to reduce the amount of food and other waste that washes down the drain and ends up in the water recirculation system.
