Morehead Fire Department gives update on new fire station plans

Samantha Morrill

The Morehead Fire Department is working on building a new fire station. Officials said it will be located on West Main Street and will replace Fire Station 1 on the bypass. It is planned to be a three-apparatus bay building with two to three offices, a kitchen, and three bedrooms.

Morehead Fire Department Chief Jeff Anderson said they’re currently designing the layout of the station, which must be complete before experts can make detailed plans.

“The architects will work on the electrical engineering, the plumbing engineering, the walls, the stud walls, and how everything is engineered for the drafted drawing so the contractors can get on that and build from those,” said Anderson.

Anderson said the location of the new station will be more ideal for callouts and will also improve how they handle their gear, specifically removing contaminants after calls.

“Our full-time guys are ready to get back downtown, most of our responses are from the downtown and the south side of town and the county so when we leave station two, where we are right now, we usually go back towards town,” said Anderson.

The project will be funded by the city. Anderson said the total cost is yet to be determined.

The design stage could take six months to a year to complete. Once the design is complete, contractors will bid on the work. Anderson said he’d like to see ground broken by next year.
