Rowan County officials have an update on the new planned senior center in Morehead. The planning of the building is nearing completion, and officials expect a bid for the construction will go out at the end of March.

The city has been working on this project for several years. Rowan County Judge Executive Harry Clark said they have tried to be thorough in their planning.

“It’s going to be about 6,300 square feet, interior space, it’ll have a small exercise area, tables, it’s going to have a commercial kitchen, so that, I know they like to cook - have a fireplace - but we’re designing it for the seniors to be able to come, enjoy, have a cup of coffee and have conversation and do some things with friends,” said Clark.

Clark said the center located near the new ambulance garage will, for the first time, provide a dedicated space in Morehead just for seniors. Due to the location, considerable thought has gone into the building’s appearance.

“What we have picked out for the exterior, it will be an “L” shaped type building, and then it will have, we believe a mixture of brick and vinyl or brick and something else to make it kind of blend in with the rest of the neighborhood rather than it stand out on its own,” said Clark.

The Rowan Judge Executive added there will be opportunities for community donations and volunteers at the center once construction is complete.
