Morehead State dropped their first contest of 2022, falling to the Tennessee State Lady Tigers in a New Year's Day matinee, 58-34. The Eagles dropped to 0-2 in OVC play, while Tennessee State improved to 2-0.
The Eagles were stymied for much of the game offensively by Tennessee State's aggressive, full court defense, which held Morehead State to shoot only 26.5% from the field and commit 24 turnovers.
Both teams struggled from the floor in the early going, but the Lady Tigers scored four straight points to come out of the evenly matched first quarter with a 14-10 lead. The offensive woes continued into the second quarter, as the Eagles held their opponents to only 23% from the floor in the frame, but only mustered four field goals themselves and went into halftime down 25-19.
Tennessee State extended their lead to 30-19 before Freddy Adams scored back to back baskets to cap off a 7-0 run for the Eagles to slice the lead down to four points, but the Lady Tigers answered back with a 15-0 run of their own over the next six minutes to put Morehead State away.
Morehead State now heads to the road, as they continue OVC play in Cookeville, Tenn., on January 6th against Tennessee Tech. The game is scheduled to tip off at 6:30 PM ET.
