Soccer Unable to Answer Quick Strikes in Road Loss to EIU

MSU Athletics

The Morehead State Soccer team suffered its first Ohio Valley Conference road loss of 2019 in a 3-0 setback against Eastern Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

Missing the defensive presence of starting outside backs Evan Kays and Katelynn Setters, the Eagles held the Panthers scoreless until a pair of goals were netted a mere 26-seconds apart in the 43rd minute by Angela Corcoran (43:08) and Pilar Barrio (43:34). The quick strikes swung momentum to the side of EIU who added its final goal in the 54th minute on a strike by Sarah DeWolf.

Barrio assisted DeWolf's score while Eva Munoz and Itxaso Aguero were credited with assists on the quick-strike goals.

"We had injuries finally catch up with us today but a lot of credit to Eastern Illinois for a well-played match," said MSU head coach Warren Lipka. "They were able to finish their chances that we allowed them to have today. We played two bad minutes before the half and they made us pay for it."

Morehead State came out with an aggressive offensive attack early and tallied five shots in the opening 22 minutes of the match. Freshman Eva Kiper struck two shot attempts and was inches from the Eagles on top in the 11th minute before her shot clanked of the crossbar.

In the remaining 68 minutes of the match, MSU's attack was slowed down and held to just six shots that included just two attempts on-goal.

Eastern Illinois goalkeeper Sarah Teteak earned the clean-sheet victory with four saves.

Morehead State's freshman goalie Kayla Landman was tagged with three goals against while making four saves.

The Panthers improved their overall record to 3-7-1 and its conference tally to 2-3-1 with its second-straight victory on its home field.

The Eagles, who came up short against Murray State in a 90-minute battle at home on Friday, fell to 4-8-1 overall in 2019 and 2-2-1 against OVC competition.

"The quick turnaround with us being home on Friday against Murray (State) and traveling across the league to EIU didn't do our health any favors," added Lipka. "We're going to focus on recovery and getting our health back up for a big homestand this coming weekend."

Morehead State is scheduled to host back-to-back OVC matches at home with UT Martin visiting on Friday at 6:00 p.m. ET and Southeast Missouri challenging on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET.
