Soccer Wins Third Straight With Clean Sheet Vs Mastodons

MSU Athletics

The Morehead State Soccer team extended its winning streak to three matches with a 2-0 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne in its final non-conference match of the 2019 season on Sunday afternoon at the MSU Recreation & Wellness Intramural Field.

"Everyone stepped up today," said head coach Warren Lipka. "After a really emotional win Friday we found a way to grind it out and I'm proud of our team for the way they competed today."

Goalkeeper Kayla Landman saved seven shots to guide the Eagles to their third consecutive clean sheet win. Landman, a freshman from Sterling Heights, Mich., has now recorded back-to-back shutouts in goal for MSU.

While the defense and Landman held their ground, the Morehead State offense found its footing as it came away with its first multi-goal game since defeating Akron at home Sept. 1. The Eagles outshot the Mastodons 13-8 and tied a season-best for shots on goal with 10.

Sophomore midfielder Haley Nelson opened the scoring for MSU as she powered her first-career goal home in the 27th minute with a rocket from the left side of the penalty box after a deflection of a corner kick.

Flash forward to 89th minute where a break-away run by sophomore Abby VanHoeve led to an open goal for Caitlyn Burdine. The goal registers the first for Burdine since her first match as a freshman at Western Carolina on Aug. 18, 2017. For VanHoweve, the assist was her second of the season.

With the loss, Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 4-4-2 overall.

The win improves Morehead State to 4-6-1 overall and gives them an even 3-3 record at home.

Next up the Eagles host Ohio Valley Conference leaders Murray State. The Racers currently lead the conference with nine points (3-0-0) while MSU is third with seven points (2-0-1).

Morehead State and Murray State are scheduled to kick off on Friday at 6:00 p.m. ET at the MSU RWIF.
