Men's Golf Claims Victory at NKU Fall Classic

MSU Athletics

For the first time since 2015, Morehead State men's golf claimed victory as the Eagles took home the championship at the NKU Fall Classic. The victory gives the program its first win since winning the NKU Fall Classic in 2015.

Tuesday's result also makes Morehead State the only two-time team champion in the five-year run of the NKU Fall Classic and secures the team's third overall (team or individual) victory at the event. The Eagles are also the only team to claim victory at both of the event's two homes, also claiming victory at Elks Run Golf Course in 2015.

"It's exciting to get the win as a team," said volunteer assistant coach Zach Smith. "We know we have a talented group of guys and to go out to the golf course and play three decent rounds of golf and get a team victory bodes well for the rest of the season."

As a team, Morehead State fashioned scores of 283-293-287-863 to claim victory, finishing three-over-par over the 54-hole event. The team's opening round 283 ties for the second-lowest round for the group this season.

"It was nice to see our team have a lot of resilience. We made birdies in bunches, but we also had a stretch of bad holes in each round, so it's nice to bounce back from those holes and come back with some birdies," added volunteer assistant coach Nick Wilkins.

Leading the scoring for the Eagles was senior Cooper Collins who earned All-Tournament honors following a fifth-place finish. Collins strung together rounds of 72-71-70-213, collecting 12 birdies over the course of the event. He concluded play at even par, thanks in large in part to combining to shoot six-under-par on Lassing Pointe's four par-5s.

Joining Collins in collecting top-15 finishes were junior Joe Muschong and redshirt junior Ryan Gillum who finished tied for 11th and 14th, respectively. Muschong fired rounds of 71-75-71-217 while Gillum crafted marks of 70-77-71-218. Gillum tied with Collins for the team lead in birdies, collecting 12 during the event with Muschong adding nine.

Rounding out the team scoring were freshman Brody Webb and junior Zac Viminitz. Webb fashioned scores of 77-70-75-222 to finish tied for 22nd while Viminitz wrote in scores of 70-78-76-224 to finish tied for 32nd. Webb secured one of the event's 14 eagles, doing so on Lassing Pointe's par-5 10th hole.

Competing as individuals, freshman Blake Evans and redshirt sophomore Mason McGhee tied for 32nd and 59th, respectively. Evans marked in scores of 71-79-74-224 while McGhee wrote in marks of 73-78-83-234.

Morehead State wastes no time in looking to capture another tournament victory, returning to the course Monday. The Eagles take on the JT Poston Invitational-formally the Hummingbird Intercollegiate-next week, travelling to Sapphire, N.C. The two-day event tees off from the Country Club at Sapphire Valley.
