Gahafer Selected to FCS Offensive Player of the Year List

MSU Athletics

Morehead State junior quarterback Austin Gahafer has led a resurgence in the Eagle football program this year, and now the nation is taking notice. The Louisville native has been named to the STATS FCS National Offensive Player of the Year Watch List.

Voting for the national honor will take place next week, with the top three vote-getters from 25 finalists getting invited to the STATS FCS Awards Banquet on Jan. 8 in Frisco, Texas, where the STATS FCS Offensive Player of the Year will be named.

The third-year starter is fourth among active FCS quarterbacks in career passing yards (8,247), and he's the only non-senior among the group. He's posted his best season as a junior, leading the Pioneer Football League in passing yards (2,977), passing yards per game (297.7), attempts (454), completions (259), touchdown passes (23) and total offense per game (294.6).

Following his 447-yard, four-touchdown performance at VMI (a narrow 43-40 loss), he was named STATS FCS National Offnesive Player of the Week.

Gahafer needs just 23 yards in the season finale at Marist Saturday to become just the second quarterback in program history to pass for 3,000 yards in a season, joining current MSU quarterbacks coach Zach Lewis. Gahafer has 11 career 300-plus-yard efforts.

Morehead State can finish 7-4, its best mark since 2007, with a win at Marist. Kickoff in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., is at 1 p.m. ET.
