MSU Athletics Recognizes Achievements at Awards Banquet

MSU Athletics

The Morehead State Athletics Honors Banquet, hosted by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, was held Monday evening (April 27) and recognized academic, athletic and civic achievements of students in the department.

"I'm proud of everyone for a great 2014-15 school year," Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services Sara Larson said. "It's important that we take time at the end of each year to honor their accomplishments in and outside of their sports."

Junior golfer Michael Fehrenbacher and senior soccer player Kim Borys received the Male and Female Scholar of the Year honors. The awards are presented to the individuals with the highest cumulative grade point average (GPA) and are generally given to upperclassmen.

Fehrenbacher, an accounting major, has worked to achieve a 3.96 GPA. Borys, a midfielder, has earned a 3.97 GPA in exercise science.

The Mr. and Miss Eagle awards are given to individuals who typically stand out within the Ohio Valley Conference or Pioneer Football League and are often in the national spotlight. Senior baseball catcher Chris Robinson is this year's Mr. Eagle, while senior soccer forward Jade Flory is Miss Eagle.

Robinson, a preseason All-OVC selection and member of the Johnny Bench Award Watch List honoring the nation's top Division I catcher, leads the team with a .386 batting average. He leads all OVC catchers with 68 hits and paces the conference with 53 runs. Robinson has 17 doubles (5th in OVC), seven home runs, 48 RBI (5th in OVC) and a team-high eight stolen bases. He also possesses a .985 fielding percentage.

Flory earns Miss Eagle for the second consecutive school year. In 2014, she ranked among the league leaders in assists (T-1st, 8), goals (2nd, 13), points (2nd, 34), points per match (2nd, 1.55), match-winning goals (3rd, 4) and assists per match (5th, 0.36). Flory, a three-time OVC Offensive Player of the Week selection this year, was a First-Team All-OVC choice after being named OVC Player of the Year in 2013. She recorded 27 career goals and 13 assists for 67 points as an Eagle. Flory recently signed with a professional soccer organization in Iceland.

The Laughlin-Miller Award was presented in honor of former MSU coaches Bob Laughlin and Len Miller, with the honoree exemplifying athletic and academic excellence, high character and citizenship. Flory also earned this honor, having been named a Second-Team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America. She has a 3.66 GPA and has been named to the Morehead State Dean's List and OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll multiple times. Flory also volunteered at McBrayer Elementary School.

The women's golf team earned the Team Academic Award. The program compiled a 3.72 team GPA in the fall. In addition to its success in the classroom, the team won a tournament, had four runner-up finishes, boasted 17 top-10 individual performances, had the OVC Golfer of the Year and two All-OVC honorees.

The Team Community Service Award was bestowed upon the program that showed the highest dedication to the Morehead and campus communities. After averaging more than 12 hours of service per player, the softball team earned the award for the third consecutive season. Projects included assisting at Bob G. Family Fun Day, cleanup at Lockegee Rock, Say Boo to Drugs Treat Fest, a food drive at Gateway Helping Hands, the Tilden Hogge Elementary School Fall Festival and movie night, RCA Fall Festival, free youth skills clinic, Red Cross blood drive, a breast cancer awareness pledge drive and helping at the special needs Vacation Bible School.

"There is always an expectation for our athletes to compete at a high level, but we also emphasize academics, community service and character," Larson said. "The annual banquet is a good reminder of what we stand for as an athletic department."
