Morehead State's football coaches will participate in Coach to Cure MD when the Eagles host Pioneer Football League opponent Davidson on Saturday, September 28, at 1 p.m.
Coach to Cure MD is a national game-day charity project, which is supported by the American Football Coaches Association. The program raises awareness and money to fund research for the most common fatal childhood genetic disorder, Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
"This is a cause I believe in, and our coaching staff is more than happy to participate," Head Coach Rob Tenyer said. "We take football very seriously around here, but muscular dystrophy is more important than a game. This is life or death for young people and so many families are affected."
Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a progressive muscle disorder that causes loss of muscle function and dependence. One in approximately every 3,500 children are affected, and life expectancy for those individuals is just in the 20s. Research to find a cure is underway on many college campuses.
Fans can make a $5 donation by texting the word "CURE" to 90999. Donations of any dollar amount can also be made on-line at CoachtoCureMD.org. Individuals wanting to support the cause are encouraged to spread the word on social media and use the hash tag #TackleDuchenne on Twitter.
"This is a terrible disease, and raising awareness for it is a priority to football coaches and athletic departments across the country," Tenyer said. "We're certainly happy to be a small part of that. We sincerely appreciate our fans, and would be very grateful for any donation they're able to make."
Morehead State's coaches will wear a Coach to Cure MD logo patch on the sidelines during Saturday's contest. More than 550 college football programs and 10,000 college football coaches participated in 2012. The program has raised more than $1 million over the past five years.
Morehead State will also spread the word via Saturday's webcast on the Ohio Valley Conference Digital Network, broadcast on the Eagle Sports Network, social media platforms, public address announcements and information cards that will be handed out inside the stadium.
