Community Garden to Benefit Area Food Banks

Highland Heights Farm

The Plaza Nazarene Church in Russell and Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital are partnering on a project to feed the poor.

They’re calling it “Grow 2 Feed” and it involves the planting, cultivating and harvesting of produce from a thousand acres the church owns.

Paula Sergent is associate pastor at the Plaza Nazarene. She says all the food grown at the site will be donated to local food banks.

Sergent says there are too many families in the region that can’t afford nutritious food.

“Especially in our area, in eastern Kentucky, there are a lot of people who just aren’t fortunate to go out and buy food. And this is another area of looking at it, the nutritional value of it. That’s kind of what got Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital on board with the idea because of this nutritional value that it will provide.”

Sergent says OLBH will supply a grant to help with the cost of operating the community garden.
