Debate on Kentucky’s Common Core Educational Standards

State Senator John Schickel wants to repeal Kentucky’s Common Core Educational standards. The Union Republican is sponsoring legislation calling for just that. He claims the standards are part of a larger effort to adopt a national curriculum…

Schickel says the federal Constitution leaves education up to the states and that’s why he opposes what he believes is a movement toward a national curriculum.

However, Kentucky’s Education Commissioner is strongly opposed to Schickel’s bill. Terry Holiday says the state standards were developed following years of input from teachers, administrators and others. He says prior to their adoption, just 34% of the state’s high school graduates were college or career-ready…

The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce has also come out against Senator Schickel’s bill, which got a hearing last week in the Senate Education Committee.
