Second SOAR Summit Planned in Pikeville

Appalachian Transition

Governor Beshear is appealing to eastern Kentuckians to attend the second summit meeting of SOAR next Monday (Feb. 16) in Pikeville.

SOAR stands for “Shaping Our Appalachian Region” and is a non-profit organization created by the governor and Congressman Hal Rogers to help the area rebound economically from the slumping coal industry.

Beshear says the initiative won’t be successful unless it has input from people who live in the region.

“The day-long event will feature a wide-ranging agenda including breakout sessions on everything from the future of computer coding, to the impact of local foods, to strategies of how to improve industry in rural communities.”–Gov. Steve Beshear

The Governor says the U.S. Labor Secretary and the head of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy will attend the meeting at the East Kentucky Exposition Center. The first session begins at 9 a.m.
