Community Advisory Board Meeting Minutes November 13, 2019

Board chair Krys Lynam called the meeting to order

Present were Board members Krys Lynam (chair), Jeremy Boone, Katelyn Clark (secretary), Jeanette Tesmer, Doug Chatham, Carol Campbell, David Gregory and station manager Paul Hitchcock

CAB members absent: Collin Alexander (vice-chair) and Shayla Ring

OLD BUSINESS

  • CAB minutes from 7 August 2019 were reviewed and approved (Tesmer/Clark)
  • MSPR Quarterly Report was presented by Hitchcock (July-September 2019).  Quarterly issue report was also discussed. Board reviewed the reports and approved.
  • Fall Fundraising and Membership Drive totals were presented - $18,702.00. These funds are dedicated for purchasing a new audio board, original goal was $17,500.00. MSU Student Ambassadors were also doing call outs that could have created additional funds, so it is possible the total funds raised will be higher.  The plan is to purchase the audio board in the spring and install in the summer. Greg Jenkins will hopefully be attending a trade show this spring in Las Vegas to speak to vendors and find deals on new equipment to purchase.

NEW BUSINESS

  • NPR is offering a digital social media platform to ask at end of year for people to give to their local public radio station. Between Thursday, Nov 28 through the end of the year, there will be a soft-sell type fundraising - social media posts, web banners, promos, email appeals etc. Listeners will be directed to a donating site, and will be asked for their zip code, and a list of public radio stations will be listed, and then will be directed to that station's fundraising page. MSPR will receive 100% of the donations. Tesmer made motion to approve, Campbell seconded, board approved.
  • KBA Excellence in Broadcasting Award - Leeann Akers (News Director) was a finalist for Rookie of the Year and attended the awards ceremony. Board congratulates Leeann!
  • CAB Student Leadership for 2020 was discussed. Criteria changes include removing the essay portion and just requiring a cover letter and unofficial transcript to be eligible for the award. (Chatham/Tesmer)
  • 2020 CAB Leadership was discussed. Collin Alexander will be appointed to Chair. Nominations for Vice-Chair and Secretary were postponed to the first meeting of the new year.
  • Programming updates:
    • EAS -  Software update was done for Emergency Alert System. It cost $350.00, and the Kentucky Broadcasters Association reimbursed $300.00 since we are required to have it and are a flagship station.
    • Twisted Tales of Poe - Greg Jenkins went to the high school and recorded/produced a radio play that aired a couple of times around Halloween.
    • Uncharted podcast done by a student, Wyatt Melton, where he reviews bands and albums. He was the first student interested in doing a show.
    • Election Coverage - we picked up KET audio, covered state election (Nov 2019) from 7-9pm. In the Spring, NPR is launching "Its Time To Listen" for 2020 Election Year, including promotional spots, banners etc. and we will be working with them. The Impeachment trial in Nov. 2019 was covered, it was on a day to day basis decision of how much to air.
    • A Time For Tales - Coming up on 400th episode
    • Our Island Universe - new feature, weekly show about space science
    • The Reader's Notebook - took a break for winter holidays
    • Thanksgiving and Winter Holidays - aired many specials through Thanksgiving and winter holidays - Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Winter Solstice and Christmas.
