Charities who will receive proceeds from the Buffalo Trace Trail Run Series and the Filthy 5K have been named.
The Buffalo Trace Trail Run Series will be staged at the former location of Big Rock Off Road Park on Stonelick Road in eastern Mason County.
The trail series is organized by Kentucky Mudfest Sports and Recreation, which stages a Filthy 5K run and obstacle course in September at the same property.
For the trail run series, a portion of registration proceeds will be given to the Maysville Women's Crisis Center, event partner Heather Bretz said.
"We chose the Women's Crisis Center, because we wanted to give back to a local place that does good in the community," Bretz said. "Last year, we gave to the Down Syndrome Association. We donate to organizations that are near and dear to our hearts."
The series begins Saturday, May 2 at the site of the former Big Rock ATV park off Stonelick Road, with a 5K at 9 a.m. The series will continue over the course of three months, with a 10K on June 6 and a 15K on July 11, according to Bretz.
Registration is $30 for individual events, $55 for two events or $80 for all three events.
"It's cheaper if you register for all three together," she said.
Bretz said participants who complete in each event will receive a t-shirt and a participation medal. The top five male and top five females will also win an award.
Bretz said the location was chosen because many runners get tired of only running courses on the pavement.
"I'm a runner," she said. "It gets exhausting running on the hard pavement and I know others do, as well. That's why we decided to hold the event at the former Big Rock location. There, people can run through the woods and have a change of scenery."
The Filthy 5K event will be held on Sept. 12 at the same location and proceeds will go to the Shriner's Hospital in Lexington.
"We chose the Shriner's Hospital because my son is treated there," Bretz said. "It's another organization that is near to our hearts."
Bretz said the Filthy 5K will be an obstacle course. Participants who complete the 5K will receive a t-shirt and a participation medal.
Both events are open to runners, walkers and children.
Registration for the event is $30.
