The Kentucky Theatre could reopen under the management of a nonprofit formed to support the venue—that’s if the city chooses to move forward with the request.
The Kentucky Theatre shut its doors in October as the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of theaters across the country. The Kentucky Theatre Group, which operated the downtown venue, also terminated its lease with the city, leaving the future of the theatre uncertain.
Monday, the nonprofit Friends of the Kentucky Theatre submitted an application to LFUCG to reopen and manage the facility. In a Facebook post, the group said it’s not sure how long the application review might take but ist's anxious to start the process. If the application is approved, the nonprofit says the goal is to continue the theatre’s "best traditions," including putting the man synonymous with the theatre, Fred Mills, back “front and center.”
Formed in 2012, Friends of the Kentucky has been active in raising funds to maintain and upgrade the theatre and its equipment.
