This year marks the 250th anniversary of Daniel Boone’s famous trek into Kentucky and this Saturday is the 227th anniversary of Kentucky's statehood. The Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort is celebrating both milestones with a full day of activities.
Executive Director Scott Alvey says families are encouraged to come to the history center campus and learn even more about the origins of the Blue Grass state.
"So we've combined these two big celebrations into one day's worth of activities," Alvey told WUKY. "We'll be looking not just at how Kentucky's explorers came through here but also the indigenous people that were there before and the impact that it has had on the history we are telling today," Alvey explained.
In addition to interactive exhibits, live music and games the day will include guest presentations:
- 11 a.m: What can we learn from archaeological digs at Fort Boonesborough ? Archaeologist Nancy O’Malley will tell us.
- 1:30 p.m.: Join long rifle expert Mel Hankla in this walk through a new display of Kentucky long rifles, powder horns and more at the new exhibit, “Into the Bluegrass—Rifles of the Kentucky Frontier.”
- 3 p.m.: What impact did Boone’s famous trek have on Native Americans? EKU historian John Bowes will share how the “settling” of Kentucky affected those who were already here.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday June 1st.
