WMKY 60th Anniversary Photos

WMKY is celebrating 60 years of broadcasting in 2025. Follow us throughout the year as we commemorate WMKY’s mission to serve the Morehead and surrounding communities with knowledge, information, and entertainment across Appalachian Kentucky.

WMKY (90.3FM) debuted on June 15, 1965, with a four-hour broadcast day operating at 10 watts of power. In 1970, power increased to 50,000 watts with a twelve-hour broadcast day, and then to twenty-four hours in 1999. Morehead State Public Radio was established in 2002, followed by live web streaming in 2003.

On February 16, 2003, WMKY’s transmitter building suffered considerable damage following a major ice storm. As basketball size chunks of ice started to melt off the broadcast tower, falling several hundred feet, destroying the roof, broadcast equipment, and operations. WMKY returned to full power on October 31, 2003.

Students are a main part of WMKY’s operations as news reporters, production editors, program hosts, and studio announcers. Maggie Kenner works in WMKY’s newsroom (1960’s) inside the Combs Building at Morehead State University.
