Scooters come to Morehead

Timothy Crowder, The Trail Blazer

One businessman has brought scooters to Morehead after an out of state trip brought alternative transportation options.

Danny Harris, the owner of Harris Technologies in Ashland, Ky, which provides Industrial Motor Shaft Alignment Services, has decided to venture into a new realm of technology. While on a trip to South Dakota for work training, Harris noticed the scooters that lined the streets.

“I’m a believer in green technologies, so when I saw the scooter, I knew it was something I wanted to get into,” said Harris.

Harris then went to the Morehead City Council and pitched his idea to them. Through this pitch, he was able to secure a business license with the city and was able to begin purchasing and deploying scooters into Morehead.  It did not cost the city any money.

The scooters have already made an impact on campus, as students have made effective use of them for moving around to classes.

“The scooters provide students who didn’t have a form of transportation before with a means of getting around town and campus quickly and they’re very affordable,” said Virgil Bowling, a sophomore at Morehead State.

Zip scooters are rented through the app “Zip Rides” and cost $1 to activate with a $0.15 fee for every minute the scooter is rented.

Zip scooters also provide students in Morehead with a new group activity.

“It’s fun to ride around on them with friends,” said Kyle Cooper, a junior at Morehead State.

However, he also feels like the scooters can be difficult to find, because there are still so few.

“I personally think more scooters would be better as the number of scooters on campus does not accommodate everybody on campus. Obviously not everyone should get one, but it would be nice to have a few more on campus.”

The scooters can be found all over the city, both on and off campus. They will not allow people to go past E Main St, Daniels Ave, Allen Ave, and Jayne Stadium.
