Work begins next week along nine miles of US 60 in Bath and Rowan counties under a $1.4 million Kentucky Transportation Cabinet safety improvement project.
The project includes new, more visible road signs – especially to mark curves – better roadway paint striping, new guardrail, drainage repairs, new blacktop, a curve realignment, and other work to reduce the risk and severity of crashes on US 60 from Cherry Lane at Farmers to KY 519 at Morehead.
Contractors expect to place work zone signs and begin preliminary construction this week. Next week, on or about July 6, work will begin in Rowan County at mile marker 2 on the curve between Acorn Industry Road and Freestone Road where there’s been a history of run-off-the-road crashes. Improvements will involve rebuilding parts of the roadway to reduce the chance of future crashes there.
During construction, a temporary traffic signal will be used to reduce US 60 to one lane around the curve for about a month. In other parts of the US 60 work zone, motorists should watch for intermittent flagged traffic. Motorists should expect delays, and adjust travel times accordingly.
The project is being done by Hinkle Contracting Company, LLC, under a $1,438,792.51 low-bid contract awarded by the Transportation Cabinet through its federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). Work is expected to be complete by the end of September.
