Women's Basketball's Gabby Crawford Earns First OVC Newcomer of the Week in 2020-21

MSU Athletics

After recording her first career double-double in her first game in an Eagle uniform, Morehead State women's basketball's Gabby Crawford earned Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week honors by unanimous selection, the league announced Tuesday.

A Munford, Tenn. native, Crawford ignited her Morehead State career by posting a pair of career-highs en route to her first career double-double against Dayton last Wednesday, pouring in 17 points and corralling 12 rebounds. The Ole Miss transfer turned things up in the second half versus the Flyers, scoring 12 points while pulling down 10 rebounds.

In 23 minutes of action, Crawford was 5-of-13 from the floor while also finding her way to the free-throw line for 13 total attempts. At the charity stripe, she connected on seven free throws with both her free throws made and free throws attempted totals leading the NCAA following the season's opening night.

She was also very active on the defensive end, collecting a block as part of nine total blocks for the Eagles against Dayton. With nine blocks in the game, Morehead State ranks fourth in the NCAA in blocked shots per game, following the team's season opener.

Crawford's selection as the inaugural OVC Newcomer of the Week during the 2020-21 season makes two straight weeks that Morehead State has garnered Player of the Week nods from the OVC as senior Jazzmyn Elston earned co-Newcomer of the Week honors during the final week of the 2019-20 regular season.
