McGuire Departing Morehead State to Return to South Carolina to Lead USC Upstate Program

MSU Athletics

After leading the Morehead State baseball program to 228 victories and two Ohio Valley Conference Tournament titles, head coach Mike McGuire is returning to South Carolina to lead the USC Upstate baseball program.

"We all here at Morehead State wish Coach McGuire and his family the very best as they embark on this new journey," said Interim Director of Athletics Jaime Gordon. "We are grateful for all that he has done to make our baseball program extremely respected in the OVC and region. We will do everything we can to make sure that the baseball program continues to move forward and will work hard to maintain the type of leadership coach McGuire brought to MSU."

McGuire is a University of South Carolina graduate, where he received his bachelor's degree, and also coached at Winthrop and Lander in the Palmetto State.

"I'd like to thank (President Emeritus) Dr. (Wayne) Andrews and (former Director of Athletics) Brian Hutchinson for hiring me seven ago and giving me an opportunity to build a program and current administration (President) Dr. (Jay) Morgan and Jaime Gordon for their support as well. My family and I are excited to be returning to South Carolina and beginning this next chapter of our lives."

Taking over in 2013, McGuire eventually guided the Eagle program, which had recorded one 30+ win season in program history prior, to five straight 30+ win campaigns and culminated his time leading MSU with a school-record 40-win season in 2019.

"We accomplished a lot over that time, and I want to thank all my assistant coaches, former assistants and all my players over that time span. It was a collective effort, and I was fortunate to always a have a great staff and great players who were all a part of putting Morehead State baseball on the map."
