Magnusson Named OVC Women’s Golfer of the Year

MSU Athletics

Sophomore Anna Magnusson, who led Morehead State with seven top-10 finishes in 2014-15, has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Women's Golfer of the Year. She was presented the award on Wednesday after the final round of the league championship.

Magnusson, who has earned all-conference accolades each of the last two years, paces the league with a 75.6 stroke average. She finished fourth out of 50 golfers at the OVC Championship with rounds of 74, 71 and 76 en route to a 221 at the Hampton Cove on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

"Congratulations to Anna on this terrific honor," Head Coach Stephanie Barker said. "She is very deserving for the way she performed this school year. Anna had great composure and handled the OVC Championship course well. This is a great way for her to finish a very solid season."

Magnusson becomes the fourth Morehead State player to be tabbed OVC Women's Golfer of the Year in the past five years. Emma Jonsson landed the award as a senior in 2011, Marisa Kamelgarn was named as a junior in 2012 and Anna Appert Lund was given the nod as a freshman in 2013.

Morehead State placed fifth out of 10 teams at the OVC Championship with a 313-305-302--920. Eastern Kentucky won the event with a 902. Jacksonville State posted a 903 to finish second, while Tennessee Tech turned in a 914 to place third and Belmont fired a 918 to close out fourth.

A native of Taby, Sweden, Magnusson now has 12 top-10 performances in 22 events as an Eagle. Morehead State's top-five effort was its eighth in 11 tournaments this school year. MSU, which has only competed in seven league tournaments (2009-15), has finished in the top half of each event.

Freshman Jeanette Petersen, freshman Ebba Gustafsson, junior Katie Rice and senior Vanessa Bognot also competed for the Eagles. Petersen and Rice recorded final-round 75s, while Bognot carded a 76 and Gustafsson notched a 77. Petersen tied for 14th, while Gustafsson tied for 20th.

Eastern Kentucky sophomore Sofie Levin claimed medalist honors with a 68 in the final round and 217 for the tournament. The course played at a par of 72 and yardage of 6,050.
