Frightening Block Spooks Eastern Kentucky's Offense as Volleyball Wins in Straight Sets

MSU Athletics

Ten total blocks helped stifle Eastern Kentucky's attack Wednesday night en route to a straight-set sweep for Morehead State over its in-state rival. The Eagles (18-8, 9-4 OVC) have now won three-straight over the Colonels (4-21, 3-10 OVC), including both matches this season via sweeps.

Senior middle blocker Maddie Fella paced Morehead State at the net, turning away seven total attacks. With seven total blocks, including two solos, Fella produced her sixth game of the season with six or more blocks in a match. Redshirt senior middle blocker Jessie Wachtman and senior right-side hitter Jordan Jones added three apiece with all three of Wachtman's blocks being solo.

The success of the Eagle block, stymied the Eastern Kentucky offense, allowing the Colonels to hit just .088. The .088 opponent hitting efficiency allowed by the Eagles marks the ninth time this season Morehead State has held its opponent to a sub-.100 hitting percentage.

Behind the block, Morehead State's back row scooped up 44 balls in the match as two players recorded double-figures. Freshman libero Allison Whitten-for the 15th consecutive match-dug up double-digit balls, saving 16 total. Fellow freshman defensive specialist Olivia Montelisciani produced 10 digs as well, doing so for the sixth time in the Eagles' last seven matches. Redshirt sophomore setter Chandler Clark added eight saves, falling just shy of her 12th double-double of the year.

Clark added 38 assists on the night, helping the offense to hit .278. In the third set alone, she produced 16 helpers on 19 Eagle kills as Morehead State turned in a .372 efficiency in the set. Four attackers fashioned an efficiency north of .250 as Wachtman (.471), sophomore outside hitter Olivia Lohmeier (.353), Clark (.333), and Jones (.263) led the way.

Lohmeier slammed home a match-high 16 kills, surpassing 10 or more terminations in her seventh straight match. Jones joined Lohmeier in double-figures, recording 10 winners for the Eagles. Falling just shy of double-digits, Wachtman added nine kills as she hit a match-best .471.

Morehead State returns home to the friendly confines of Wetherby Gym to close the season hosting the final three matches. The homestand begins Saturday as the Eagles host another in-state foe in Murray State. Match time is set for 2 p.m. ET.
