Big Sandy Community and Technical College’s Library Seminar Series will sponsor a Women’s History Conference on Friday, March 21, on the Prestonsburg campus.
The event is free and open to the public. Registration will be from 7:45 a.m. to 8:20 a.m. in the Pike Building.
“This is a unique opportunity to learn about women, their role in leadership and history and other important topics,” said Judy Howell, a professor and reference librarian at BSCTC. “We have assembled some great presentations that will leave participants enlightened and encouraged.”

Toufic Saad, Self Defense for Women, 8:30 a.m.: Participants will learn the psychological awareness, verbal skills and physical training needed when one is found in harm’s way.
Tammy Ball, Our Local Sustainability Movement, 8:30 a.m.: Ball will show participants how they can be involved in the local food movement. As part of a group of college employees who started a community garden, Ball and other BSCTC employees helped raised more than 1,000 pounds of fresh produce last year that went to local food pantries.
Garrison Turner, Our Beautiful World: Harmony in Science and Nature, 9:05 a.m.: This presentation gives a brief description of some examples of the beauty found in nature and how it connects with science and mathematics.
Dr. Shirley Thomas, The Angel-Makers and Widow-Makers, 9:05 a.m.: Dr. Thomas will highlight cases of sinister nature that arose from the World War I era “emancipation.”
Dr. Nancy Johnson: Women in Leadership, 9:50 a.m.: Dr. Johnson, provost at BSCTC, will present an interactive discussion on what has worked for successful women leaders.
Laura Ford Hall, Communicating with Aliens: The Differences between Men and Women, 9:50 a.m.: Men and women communicate and listen in different ways, but what are the differences between genders? This workshop is a fun and interesting look at techniques that can apply to everyday life.
Michelle Fields, Trial of Madam Caillaux, 10:25 a.m.: In May 1914, the wife of the former Prime Minister of France walked into the offices of one of Paris’s leading newspapers. In front of witnesses, she shot and killed the editor. Her murder trial provides a fascinating look at murder, politics, scandal, adultery, divorce, war, corruption and the status of women during the Belle Époque, while the world teetered on the verge of a world war.
Sabra Jacobs, Prestonsburg Woman’s Club, 11 a.m.: This is a presentation about the Prestonsburg Woman’s Club.
Vanessa McKenzie, professor of cosmetology at BSCTC, will provide free manicures to participants. Students will perform the service, which includes shaping of nails, cuticle treatment, massage and polish.
