Kentucky Wired / KCNA

         Morehead City Council voted to move forward with plans to construct a fiber optic network Friday, though some were concerned with an increase to the cost of the project.

   The Kentucky Wired Project would provide the capacity for high-speed broadband internet in the city. The council voted to approve a memorandum of understanding with the Kentucky Communications Network Authority.

   Councilman Tom Carew was the lone dissenting vote. He says the over $275,000 price tag is too steep an increase from estimations earlier this week…

A Morehead State student was struck by a vehicle and killed in Chicago early Sunday morning. W-K-Y-T reports Anan Albalawi, 27, was one of five people hit by a vehicle after the cab they were in broke down. Albalawi was pronounced dead at the scene. The other four were taken to area hospitals. Albalawi was a junior international student and engineering major. He was reportedly the only MSU student in the group. Illinois State Police said the vehicle did not stop and that they have a female driver in custody.

Rowan County’s Democratic candidates for County Clerk are preparing for potential national media interest in the race.

The candidates discussed the possibility of media attention and protests similar to the 2015 controversy involving current County Clerk Kim Davis’ refusal to sign marriage licenses.

Bluegrass Benefit

A benefit concert featuring local bluegrass bands will take place this Saturday, March 31st at Heritage Elementary School near Grayson. Music by artists including Jonathan Cox, The Pactolus Pony Riders, Billie Renee Johnson, and Hammertowne.

Chaston Carroll plays mandolin with Hammertowne. The concert will raise money for his uncle, 55-year-old Roger Oney of Willard, who was diagnosed with cancer after doing some blood work…

Morehead State University

Morehead State University President Dr. Jay Morgan announced highlights of the university's budget plans to the campus community last Friday.

In a series of forums, Morgan remarked MSU is doing comparatively well this fiscal year, given Governor Bevin's proposed state budget and an increase in pension costs.

“We have been very conservative in our hiring,” Morgan said. “We've been very conservative in what we've spent, and it's come back to help us. In that perspective, we are in much better shape than many of our sisters around the state.”
