Morehead State University will host the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Candlelight March and Service Program on Monday, Jan. 19, at 6 p.m.
Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to come together for an evening of reflection, learning and service.
The program will begin with a candlelight march and continue with student reflections, an educational video and a service activity focused on gratitude and giving back to the campus community.
“By emphasizing community, leadership, and giving back, the program strengthens campus connection while honoring an important moment in U.S. history,” said Chloe Marstiller (Class of 2023), fraternity and sorority life coordinator.

- 5:45 to 6 p.m. | Gathering Location (Weather-Dependent)
Participants gather at the Little Bell Tower to receive battery-operated candles. In the event of inclement weather, the gathering will take place inside the Adron Doran University Center near the second-floor fireplace. - 6 to 6:10 p.m. | Welcome & Historical Context
Student Activities will provide opening remarks. - 6:10 to 6:15 p.m. | Student Reflection
Student Speaker Emmanuel Jones (senior media production & journalism major from Cordova, Tennessee) will share a reflection on leadership, service, and personal inspiration drawn from Dr. King’s legacy. - 6:15 to 6:30 p.m. | Candlelight March
Participants will take part in a quiet candlelight march beginning at the Bell Tower and looping down University Street to Elizabeth Avenue and back up University Boulevard to the Adron Doran University Center. If held indoors due to weather, the walk will begin near the second-floor fireplace and proceed around ADUC. The MSU Black Gospel Ensemble is scheduled to sing at the beginning or conclusion of the march. - 6:35 to 6:50 p.m. | Educational Video
A short documentary video will be shown, highlighting Dr. King’s leadership, the Civil Rights Movement, and principles of nonviolence and service. - 6:50 to 7:20 p.m. | Service Activity: Thank-You Card Writing
Participants will write thank-you cards for MSU Dining Services staff in recognition of their contributions to the campus community. Light refreshments will be provided. - 7:20 to 7:30 p.m. | Closing Remarks
The program will conclude with closing remarks from the Student Activities office.
“We believe this structure provides a meaningful and respectful observance of Dr. King’s legacy while aligning with university values and applicable state requirements,” said Student Activities and Programs Director Melisa Patrick (Class of 1983).
