New Kentucky State Park app connects the Commonwealth’s 44 state parks

Officials said Kentucky’s 44 state parks are more connected than ever before with a new app. The app boasts updating trail maps that officials said work even without service.

Governor Andy Beshear said state parks have a lot for folks to enjoy.
“With this new app, exploring our 44 parks is going to be easier and safer. For the first time, visitors will have access to detailed, updated offline trail maps, outdoor activities, and hiking opportunities right at their fingertips.” Beshear said.

Officials said the free mobile app, powered by OuterSpatial, provides up-to-date detailed park maps where users can view boundaries, trail networks, restrooms, and parking areas. The app has over 150 outdoor points of interest including scenic overlooks, boat launches, playgrounds, climbing areas, fishing areas, historical sites, and other amenities.

Beshear said each park has its own unique digital badge in the app that users can earn from attending the parks.

“In addition to hiking, many sites have golfing, lakes, birding, and more. If you haven't been to a park in a while, it's time to plan a visit. And while you're there, you can take part in the new Kentucky Passport Challenge,” Beshear said.

To complete the Kentucky Passport Challenge, users must collect all 44 badges.

Each park’s staff can create outings on the app that offer users curated experiences, often involving outdoor goals and digital badges for achievements.

This comes as Georgetown Scott County Parks and Recreation became one of just 11 departments across the country to receive accreditation through the National Recreation and Park Association. To receive that certification, the department had to meet national standards that ensure responsiveness to the needs of their community.
