KTAP funding for families in need is being reduced

Families who rely on the Kentucky Transitional Assistance Program may not receive the benefits and services they initially expected. Due to rising costs of living and faster than expected growth of participation, the program is expected to experience substantial reductions in the amount of aid it can provide.

Dr. Steven Stack, Secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, said even though the program is in the process of cutting funds, eligible families will still receive some money.

“We’ve had to make the difficult decision to reduce KTAP cash benefits and transportation supports,” said Stack. “The new amount for eligible families is still higher than the amounts prior to 2023. However, it will still be an adjustment.”

Officials claim the cost to run the program recently exceeded the amount of funding the federal government provides through their TANiF grants. Stack added that the state is still committed to helping families in need find the assistance they need.

“This is not a penalty for families receiving KTAP or for those participating in the Kentucky Works programs. This change is the result of circumstances that go beyond any one program or household," he said. “We recognize that these reductions will result in added burdens, and we are committed to helping families connect with other resources where possible.”
