With the leaves changing and the harsh summer heat cooling down, many nature lovers are flocking to the Daniel Boone National Forest and Red River Gorge to take in Kentucky’s natural beauty. However, several serious hiking safety incidents across the state are making search and rescue organizations urge people to take precautionary measures.
Kevin Osbourn with Wolfe County Search and Rescue said there are several steps hikers can take to ensure they remain safe when they hike.
“By being prepared in advance, staying on the trails, bringing the essentials, charging that phone, you can really enjoy the gorge safely,” he said. “That’s what it’s all about, keeping you and your family safe.”
Additionally, officials from FEMA and other organizations are telling people that preparedness starts at home. Osbourn added that people should always have a plan of action in the event an emergency may occur.
“Check those weather alerts, take shelter, have an emergency kit and that will help you be really ready in the event of an emergency.” said Osbourn.
Osbourn said that hikers should know their capabilities and never attempt a trek or trail that is beyond their level. He added, in the event someone does get lost or disoriented, they should immediately contact emergency services. Having location services enabled on smart devices is crucial for searchers to more quickly rescue those who get lost.
