This month, health officials in the Commonwealth are fighting obesity by helping Kentuckians lead healthier lifestyles. A recent survey found that over 30 percent of Kentucky adults are overweight and nearly 40 percent more are classified as obese.
Health officials with the state said diet is one of the leading contributors to obesity. Dr. Steven Stack said one of the most important steps people struggling with obesity can take is to make small dietary changes.
“It’s important to maintain a balanced diet. A good weight management meal plan includes a variety of healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy. It also includes a variety of protein foods such as lean meats, poultry, eggs, nuts, and seeds,” said Stack.
Stack said another step people can take to lose weight is engaging in regular physical activity. He added this doesn’t necessarily mean Kentuckians need to go to a gym for hours at a time.
“You don’t need special skills or equipment to stay active. Everyday activities like walking your dog or using the stairs can boost your health,” he said. “It’s important to try a variety of different activities to find ones you really enjoy. If you like an activity, you’re more likely to stick with it.”
Studies have shown that staying socially engaged with those around you can promote overall health. Obesity is a disease that increases people’s risk of developing more serious conditions such as heart disease or type two diabetes. More information on combatting obesity can be found at myplate.gov.
