This September, the Morehead-Rowan County Airport is hosting its first fly-in and car show featuring a variety of sights and activities. The weekend will include hot air ballon rides, helicopter rides, and for the adventurous at heart, skydiving.
Jack Holley, manager of the airport, said he hopes this event will be something the entire community can enjoy. Holley adds this will hopefully be the first of many fly-ins.
“The airport’s primary mission is to enhance commerce opportunities for this region we feel prepared to give back to the community we serve. It’s a great opportunity for fellowship, sense of community, fun for everybody, and the like. We intend to make this an annual event going forward,” said Holley.
He added that nearly all the space at the airport is booked full of vendors, activities, and wing campers. However, event organizers are determined to add any more festivities they can.
“We’ve got 28 acres out there and we’re beginning to squeeze it just with what we have so far,” said Holley. “If we can muster anymore events of interest or fun for folks, we’re going to add it on as we go.”
The bulk of the festivities will begin Saturday and will include the car and air show, live music, food vendors, skydiving exhibitions, and chances for the public to take a ride in a hot air balloon or Huey helicopter. Veterans of the Korean and Second World War can ride free of charge in the aircraft.
The fly-in will begin on Friday, September 12 and wrap up on Sunday the 14th.
