Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, is hosting a tax prep event at the Rowan County Public Library. Organizers said the event is open to all members of the community, but resources are targeted toward helping low-to-moderate income families with non-exceedingly complicated tax returns.
Andrea Miller is Chief Housing Officer for ZeroV and is volunteering as a tax prep assistant. She said meeting with a professional can reduce the chance of missing out on tax credits.
“Sometimes about 25 percent of people who are actually eligible for earned income tax credit don't claim it, and it's a pretty nice perk, especially if there are children involved in the household,” said Miller.
People interested in attending a free prep session must have valid photo IDs and social security cards for all people included on the tax return, including all spouses and dependents, and previously filed tax documents, such as W-2s, 1099s, or brokerage statements.
Miller added one of the most common mistakes people make when filing is forgetting income.
“It’s a good idea to reflect on what you did during that tax year. So, for 2024, where the places that you worked, and make sure you get your tax information from those places so that you can file a complete return the first time,” said Miller.
The event is February 10 and 20, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Appointments can be made by calling 859-608-1375 and walk-ins are welcome.
