Now is the time to sign up for Morehead city youth basketball teams. Parks and Recreation officials will be accepting players from Rowan and surrounding counties through the month of September. Tyler Thacker is a program director at Morehead Parks and Recreation. He said three age groups will make up the city league. One group is for 1st and 2nd graders, one is for 3rd and 4th, and the last is 5th and 6th graders.

The cost to sign up is $40 for 1st and 2nd graders and $45 for 3rd through 6th graders. Thacker said if cost is a barrier, there are several community sponsors that help bridge the gap.

“We have worked with the youth service centers at the schools, and they have provided assistance, as well as individuals who are willing to help. So, we do have multiple options on that,” Thacker said.

Thacker added the teams will be practicing and playing in several locations throughout the county due to the demolition of the league’s previous headquarters, Laughlin Health Building on MSU’s campus.

“It was at Laughlin, which was wonderful. And now we are transitioning into elementary school, the high school, the middle school, and then we are hoping to get the Carl Perkins Center running as soon as possible. We plan on having a gym in there here soon,” said Thacker.

Thacker said player forms can be filled out at the parks and rec office at 314 Bridge Street. The documents are also available online for people to print, fill out, and turn in through the mail slot at the main office. More information can be found at morehead-ky.gov.
