New NCAA settlement means changes for Morehead State Athletics

Samantha Morrill

Students and faculty alike are preparing for a new school year at Morehead State University.

Student athletics is also receiving changes and updates. That’s according to Kelly Wells, director of athletics at MSU. He said an NCAA settlement gives the university more options for managing Morehead State Athletics, most notably in terms of student athlete benefits. The new arrangement will allow the university to directly influence and manage student benefits, rather than rely on a third party to do so.

“But it does give you creativity if you have a dedicated booster, you have a shift of money flow, they come in and give you a chance to do that institutionally versus doing it through a third party,” said Wells.

He added the settlement will also influence revenue sharing, access to tournaments and championships, roster development, and more. Wells also clarified that while many universities in Kentucky use student fees as a source of support for athletics, this is not the case for MSU.

“Currently we don’t do any of that at Morehead State. So, all of our resources that we get for student athlete benefits all are generated through athletics, fundraising, partnerships and things of that nature,” Wells said.

The MSU football home opener is scheduled for August 30 at 6 p.m. against Allen University.
