Officials said Morehead State University’s Doctoral Program in Education has been recognized by national publications for its flexibility and commitment to professional preparation.

MSU was named to the Princeton Review’s 2024 list of top online Doctor of Education programs for the fourth consecutive year. Forbes Advisor also recognized MSU’s program as one of nine best of 2024, the only Kentucky university in the list. The doctorate features specializations in adult and higher education, career and technical education leadership, educational technology, p-12 administrative leadership, and exceptional childhood education.

Tim Simpson is associate dean of the Volgenau College of Education and director of the Doctoral program at MSU. He said it’s very selective, only accepting about 24 to 36 students every year to maintain a manageable class size.

“We feel like we can provide enough personal attention for that amount of students. Any more might begin to stretch us, and we’re trying to personalize this program to individuals, and so we don’t want to get so big that we can’t provide that personal attention,” said Simpson.

He said the online coursework provides ample resources, including an in-person summer session to encourage community building.

“Online education, quite frankly, can be a little lonely, sitting at your home or at your work. You’re doing your work by yourself, nobody else around, and sometimes that becomes hard to get motivated. You feel like you’re all alone, you’re the only one with the struggle,” said Simpson. “But when we bring everyone together, we recognize we’re basically all in the same boat. Same struggles, same problems.”

The deadline to apply for the Doctor of Education program in the 2024-25 academic year is April 1. More information can be found here.
