US 460 in Magoffin County to be closed for construction

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Department of Highways District 10

Drivers traveling between West Liberty and Salyersville this month could be impacted by some roadwork.

Transportation officials said construction on US 460 in Magoffin County is set to begin on October 9. The road will be closed for realignment from mile points 10.0 to 10.6. The closure will impact through traffic between Salyersville and West Liberty.

Public Information Officer H.B. Elkins said the closure will make the road safer and prevent accidents.

“It’s going to take the sharpness out of the curve, and it should make the roadway safer for traffic that passes through it. It will be a little wider than the road that’s currently there and there will be some shoulders there, that the existing US 460 going back toward Morgan County doesn’t really have any shoulders,” Elkins said.

Elkins also said the detour in place should not add much travel time for the roughly 3,700 vehicles that drive on that road every day.

“The locals that drive that road will be familiar with it and what the detour is, and there will be signs posted to let drivers that aren’t familiar with the area know what the detour route is going to be, but it’ll only add about 10, maybe 15 minutes,” said Elkins.

The detour reroutes drivers from US 460 to KY 30 and the Mountain Parkway, which will reconnect with US 460. Work is set to be completed by October 22.
