Morehead crews complete search of area where remains were found

Rowan County Coroner

First responders in Morehead completed their search of an area where skeletal remains were found over the weekend.

Sunday afternoon officials received a call about a human skull found in a remote wooded area within Morehead city limits. Rowan County Coroner John Northcutt confirmed the skeletal remains and had them transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort. Crews continued to search the woods around the site until dark Sunday night.

Rowan County Emergency Management Director Jarred Moore said at first light Monday morning, it was all hands on deck.

“We had approximately 55 searchers across kind of all jurisdictions, from fire, police, EMS. The area of interest was around a half mile, a quarter mile in radius to the skull that was found,” said Moore.

The search of the area ended around 5 p.m. on Monday. Some items were recovered in the search, but it has not been announced specifically what those items are. The case is under investigation by Detective Steve Justice and Rowan County Coroner John Northcutt.
