Eaglefest draws crowd to engage Morehead State students

Anabel Peterman

Morehead State University kicked off the academic year with its annual Eaglefest celebration Wednesday, August 16. Campus clubs, Greek life, local businesses, and other MSU organizations gathered at the Adron Doran University Center Commons to welcome students to the Morehead community. Participants socialized with fellow students, interacted with more than 120 MSU clubs and organizations, played games, and those who arrived early got a free ‘stuff-a-plush’ bear.

Presley Boyer is the President of MSU’s Student Government Association, a campus-wide advocacy body for students. She said this year’s Eaglefest was especially lively, and SGA used the great turnout as an opportunity to engage with the campus body.

“For us, it’s not about students joining our organization, it is about us making sure that we are known for them as a resource, so we do love that aspect of it. And that we do get new members to join if they are interested, but it’s basically just about the students knowing who we are and how we can help them,” said Boyer.

Kennedy Little is the President and founder of Evergreen, a campus group focused on environmental awareness. She said as a relatively new organization, Eaglefest has given Evergreen great momentum to spread its mission and give out free merchandise, like recycling bins.

“A lot of students are so interested about learning about the environment, and also about vegan options and how to just make the world a better place by, really, any means necessary and it’s really great to kind of hear their opinions on things they want to see done. And it is a little hectic, but I think that’s awesome, it shows that students are engaged and wanting to get involved with community life,” said Little.

Official MSU offices also had the chance to connect with students at this year’s Eaglefest. Andrew Sexton is the Coordinator of Service Learning at the Center for Career Development and Experiential Education. He said the event lets them reach out to students who might not pass by their office on the ground floor of the Library.

“In addition to Eaglefest, all the first-year students, as part of their FYS class, they get to visit us as part of their ‘eagle chase’ assignment. So, this lets us get exposure to older students as well who come to Eaglefest,” said Sexton.
