Fleming County Schools is offering free back to school haircuts for students in need on August 1 and 3.
Parents or guardians must give the school the student’s name and their grade level. Then the school will give a time and date for their appointment with a local hair salon.
Samantha Morris is the family resource assistant coordinator at Ewing Elementary. Morris said it’s illegal for stylists to come to a school to do haircuts.
“It has to be at their salon. So, that’s why I reached out to a couple people that had salons to see if they would be willing to help us out. I saw another county that was doing it, and I was like, ‘That’s a great idea. I want to bring it back to Fleming County’. There’s so many kids that come in. They can’t get haircuts before school starts, you know. They don’t have that, the luxury of going to do that. So, I’m just excited that we can help them out and they can come in looking fresh for the new year,” said Morris.
She also said there will be sensory-sensitive options for any student that needs it.
“If they tell me that they need something like that, then I will just give them a different time. So they can go, and there won’t be anyone else there. So, we can definitely accommodate whoever. I’ve also had someone ask if it was for Head Start students too, and the answer is yes. Technically, they are Fleming County students and they will be as soon as they hit pre-school or kindergarten with us. So, we are also extending that offer out to Head Start students,” said Morris.
There will only be 100 free vouchers given out to Fleming county students. Most of the vouchers are for a Flemingsburg salon, though a limited number of vouchers will be available for a salon in Maysville.
Parents and guardians have until July 31 to sign students up for the free haircuts. They can contact Morris at 856-209-6017 for more information and vouchers.
