Eastern Kentucky’s annual 50-Mile Yard Sale is set to start this weekend

Sellers and vendors will be set up all along KY 52 through Breathitt, Lee and Estill counties this Friday and Saturday. Officials said many visitors come to the yard sale from outside of the region. H.B. Elkins is spokesman for Department of Highways District 10. He said an unfamiliar road can be a challenge for drivers.

“52 is kind of a curvy road, with a couple or three decent sized hills. So, you always urge people who are unfamiliar with the route to be careful and to drive slow. Because you don’t know what’s around the next bend,” said Elkins.

Message boards will be set up to remind drivers of heavy traffic and some locations may have flaggers directing cars. People out shopping are encouraged to wear bright colors so drivers can easily see them.

“Pedestrians, people crossing the road, maybe they parked across the road from the yard sale that they want to stop and visit. Urging people to look both ways, to use extreme caution when they’re crossing the road. People who are driving by to watch out for people crossing the road, especially children. Maybe pets,” said Elkins.

As for sellers and vendors, the transportation official reminds them that setting up sales on state right of ways is prohibited under Kentucky law.

Elkins said parking is also an issue. People are warned to not to park on state right of ways or within 20 to 30 feet of the road. The transportation official said this yard sale has been drawing people to eastern Kentucky for around 15 years.
